Bakewell views

Bakewell is a market town in the centre of the Peak District built on the River Wye. It has a long history that was once part of the Mercian kingdom and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. One of the earliest buildings in the town is the picturesque bridge that dates back to the 13th century. It has 5 arches and is still strong enough to take cars, albeit one direction at a time. The church was originally founded in the 10th century and has 2 Saxon crosses in the graveyard but was restored in the 19th century

The Monday market in the town dates back to 1254 and there are stalls in the town centre, although the cattle market is the other side of the bridge

The name Bakewell is perhaps synomonous with the Bakewell tart. However, this is not the case. The original sweet from Bakewell is the Bakewell Pudding as pictured. It is a jam pastry with an egg and ground almond flavoured filling, but there is no sponge, icing or cherry. The Bakewell tart is disregarded in the town as a cheap copycat. There are two shops that sell the 'Original Bakewell Pudding' and a lot of visitors buy it.

There are a few annual events that are worth looking out for,. These include the Peak District "Well Dressing," in une, the Bakewell Agricultural Show and the Bakewell Arts Festival in August.

The Town also has some good hotels and is a good central base to explore the Peak District.
