Eyam

guide_description

Eyam (pronounced "Eem") is a small lead mining village with a sad story. In 1665, it lost half of its population to a plague after supposedly a tailor brought some cloth back from London that had some infected fleas in it. The local Rector quarantined the village and arranged for food to be left at the village boundaries. The coins to pay for the food was left in holes made in the boundary stones that were filled with vinegar to disinfect them. These holes can still be seen today as can the houses next to the church which are called Plague cottages where it explains who died and where.
